Merrifield gets extension, payday

The Kansas City Royals and utility-man Whit Merrifield have agreed to a 4 year, $16.25 million deal to keep him in Kansas City for the foreseeable future, according to Jon Morosi and Jon Heyman. This includes another $2 million in performance bonuses. There is a club option for 2023. This contract covers Merrifield's 3 years of arbitration eligibility, plus his final pre-arbitration season. Merrifield could reach free agency for the first time in 2023 if the club option isn't exercised. Merrifield had a career year last season, hitting .304 with 12 homers and 60 RBI, while leading MLB in hits and stolen bases. He finished 17th in the MVP race. Merrifield is primarily a 2nd baseman, but played at least once at 5 different positions last year, and had 30 appearances in Center Field.
