Cole, Bauer, Wood win arbitration

Players are continuing to win big in arbitration. Houston Astros RHP Gerrit Cole, Indians RHP Trevor Bauer, and Reds LHP Alex Wood all won their arbitration cases yesterday, according to Jeff Passan. Gerrit Cole, who was the anchor of the Astros rotation behind Justin Verlander, will make $13.5 million this year, greater than the Astros offer of $11.425 million.

Trevor Bauer will also earn $13 million this year. The Indians offered $11 million. Bauer also ripped the Indians over a apparent "Character Assassination" that reportedly took place over the last 10 minutes of the hearing. Bauer said of the Indians' words that "I learned that giving to charity is a bad thing. I learned that agreeing with someone on a podcast just for the sake of argument that I was worth $10.5 million ... should be the definitive answer why I'm not worth $13 (million)." When asked if the team said anything else, Bauer didn't sugarcoat anything. "Basically, that I'm a terrible human being," he said. "Which was interesting on their part. I thought that giving to charity, especially because they didn't mention it was a charitable campaign, just mentioned the name". He continued by saying that "You never know how the character assassination plays, and considering that's what ended it, it kind of put a black mark on what I thought was a really (well) argued case on both sides. There's not room for that. Let's just stick to the numbers. Let the numbers tell the story."

Wood will earn $9.65 million this season. That tops the Reds offer of $8.7 million. Players have now won 6 of the 9 arbitration hearings that have taken place this winter, with only 2 more hearings scheduled. They are for Detroit Tigers pitcher Michael Fulmer and Yankees staff ace Luis Severino.
