Nationals sign Sipp

The Washington Nationals and LHP Tony Sipp have agreed to a 1 year deal, as reported by Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post. Sipp will earn $1 million in 2019 and has a one year mutual option for 2020 with a $250,000 buyout.

Sipp joins a Nationals team that has reloaded their bullpen, adding fireballer Trevor Rosenthal and Kyle Barraclough this winter. Sipp, who is 35, spent his last 5 years playing for the Houston Astros.

Sipp allowed his lowest home runs per nine innings rate last season, at 0.2 HR/9. His 83.3 % runners left on base rate was second best in Astros relievers with at least 30 innings pitched. Sipp has a career 3.67 ERA and 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings for the Astros, Cleveland Indians, and Arizona Diamondbacks. The Nationals have maintained interest in Craig Kimbrel, but will not exceed the luxury tax threshold to get him.
