Bauer baffles Houston batters as Indians win pitchers contest

Trevor Bauer has had some history with the Houston Astros. A tough relationship with Gerrit Cole, trash talk with Alex Bregman, and a blown save and loss in game 3 of the ALDS last year. So it's no surprise that Bauer brought his best last night against the 'Stros. It was Bauer vs Gerrit Cole that became a pitcher's duel, with Bauer out-dueling Cole and getting the Indians a 2-1 win.

Bauer hurled 8 strong innings, Leonys Martin and Jake Bauers homered off Cole, and the tribe grabbed a win on the road last night. Bauer improved to 8-0 in his career against the 'Stros, and 2-0 against his former teammate Cole, who he played with at UCLA. After the win, Bauer said that ''I knew I was going to have to mix up some sequences and do things a little differently than I normally did, I thought it worked OK. They hit some balls hard right at some people.'' Bauer has had a solid start to the season, allowing 2 or fewer runs in 5 of his 6 starts.

Leonys Martin got the first Indians hit of the game off Cole in the 3rd, with a solo home run that just cleared the right field wall, giving Cleveland a 1-0 lead. Bauers led off the 5th inning with his homer that made it 2-1 Cleveland, and that score would hold throughout. Brad Hand got his 7th save of the season for Cleveland in the 9th.

Cole, who fell to 1-4 with the loss, gave up 2 runs on 3 hits with 10 strikeouts over 7 innings. It was a solid start for Cole, coming off one of his worst starts, where he gave up 9 runs to the Texas Rangers over 4 1/3 innings. Manager AJ Hinch said after the game that ''I thought he was very good and threw some good changeups, excellent fastballs, his breaking ball was good, he got better after the first inning and did exactly what we hoped to keep us in the game.'' The Astros got their run on a 3rd inning homer by George Springer. First pitch for the 2nd game of the series is at 8:10 in Houston.
