Cards extend Carpenter

The St.Louis Cardinals and Matt Carpenter have agreed to a 2 year extension, with an option for the 2022 season. Carpenter is in the final year of his current contract, and the contract will start next year. Carpenter will make $39 million across 2020 and 2021, and the option will be automatically picked up if Carpenter makes 1,100 plate appearances over the life of the contract. Carpenter would earn $18.5 million in 2022 if the option is picked up.

Carpenter has hit .273 with 134 home runs since being drafted by the Cardinals in the 2009 MLB draft. Carpenter is also versatile, having played at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd base. This season, he has played every game at 3rd base. The Cardinals recently extended Paul Goldschmidt for 5 years in the spring.
