New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso won the 2019 Home Run derby by beating Vladimir Guerrero Jr in the finals by a 23-22 score. Guerrero finished with 91 homers, setting the record for every round of the home run derby. Guerrero crushed Matt Chapman in the first round, and had an epic battle with Dodgers OF Joc Pederson in the second round that involved three tiebreakers, with Guerrero winning 40-39. He had 30 more homers than the previous record set by Giancarlo Stanton in 2016.

Alonso didn't need to work as hard. He only needed 14 homers to beat Indians 1B Carlos Santana in the first round, and 20 to beat Atlanta Braves OF Ronald Acuna Jr in the second. Alonso was tied with Acuna late in the second round, and clinched his spot in the finals by hitting the last pitch he saw into the stands. Alonso hit only 57 homers all night to win, way less than Guerrero's 91 total. Guerrero did not make the AL all star team, but you can see Alonso in the all star game tomorrow night.
