Cubs trade for Maldonado

The Kansas City Royals have traded C Martin Maldonado to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for LHP Mike Montgomery. Maldonado signed with the Royals during spring training after Salvador Perez went down for the year. He is hitting .227 with 6 homers and 17 RBI this season. Maldonado also has 7 runs saved this year, third in MLB. He'll provide catching depth for the Cubs, as Willson Contreras was just placed on the 10 day IL.

Montgomery has struggled in the bullpen for the Cubs this year, posting a 5.67 ERA with just 18 strikeouts. He's a candidate to move into the Kansas City starting rotation, especially with the Royals having just dealt Homer Bailey. Montgomery has spent parts of the last 4 years with the Cubs as both a starter and reliever, and was on the mound for the final out of the 2016 world series, which broke the 108 year drought for Chicago. Montgomery was the Royals' first round pick in 2008 and spent his first five years in the Royals' minor league system.
