The New York Mets have signed RHP Dellin Betances to a one year, $10.5 million deal, according to the Mets. There is a player option for the 2021 season, and a vesting option for 2022. Financial details of the options aren't known. Betances can earn as much as $13 million if he pitches in 70 or more games in 2020. Betances is a longtime member of the New York Yankees, so he'll be staying in New York.

Betances said of the signing that "I love New York, I grew up in Manhattan. Went to high school in Brooklyn. Played minor-league ball in Staten Island. Made it to the big leagues in the Bronx. Now, I'm excited to go win a World Series with the Mets in Queens." Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen said of Betances that "Dellin is one of the elite relievers in the game with an incredible track record of pitching on the biggest stage and in playoff games, this is a tremendously exciting gift for Mets fans this holiday season in our championship pursuit."

Betances missed most of the 2019 season after suffering a shoulder injury in spring training. He made his season debut on September 15 in Toronto, but he only lasted just two outs before he suffered a torn Achilles while hopping off the mound after a strikeout. His Achilles was only partially torn, so he didn't need any surgery. Betances joins a Mets bullpen full of bounceback candidates like him, including Jeurys Familia and Edwin Diaz.

Betances has been selected to 4 all star games in his 8 year tenure with the Yankees. He was a cornerstone of their bullpen for the last few years. From 2014 to 2018, Betances had a 2.22 ERA with 607 strikeouts and 36 saves. In 2018, Betances became the first reliever to record 5 consecutive 100+ strikeout seasons. Sam Haggerty was DFA'd by the Mets to make room for Betances.
