The Philadelphia Phillies have signed RHP Zack Wheeler to a 5 year, $118 million contract, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. The deal is one of the largest in team history, falling behind only Cliff Lee and Bryce Harper. The Chicago White Sox also made an offer to Wheeler, and it was over $118 million. Wheeler's wife is from New Jersey, which could have been a factor in his decision. Wheeler was a highly sought after pitcher this winter.

Wheeler finishes his New York Mets tenure with a career 44-38 record with a 3.77 ERA in 126 starts, all with the Mets. He missed both 2015 and 2016 due to Tommy John surgery and a flexor strain, but his last two seasons have been solid. He had a 3.31 ERA with 179 strikeouts in 2018, and a 3.96 ERA with 195 strikeouts in 2019. The Mets will receive draft pick compensation because Wheeler was extended a qualifying offer.
