The Cincinnati Reds have signed Japanese OF Shogo Akiyama to a 3 year deal, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Financial terms aren't known, but the deal is reportedly worth over $20 million. Akiyama hit .301 with 116 homers and 513 RBI while playing for the Seibu Lions the last 9 seasons. The Reds won't have to pay a transfer fee due to the service time Akiyama has accrued in Japan.

Akiyama's deal is still pending a physical, as he is still in Japan and has to come to Cincinnati to undergo the physical. Akiyama is expected to compete with Nick Senzel, Aristedes Aquino, and Jesse Winker for a starting outfield spot in spring training. Akiyama will become the first Japanese born player to suit up for the Reds. The Reds have been active this offseason, signing Mike Moustakas and Wade Miley in addition to Akiyama, to try and make the Reds competitive in 2020.
