The Washington Nationals have signed IF Asdrubal Cabrera to a one year, $2.5 million deal, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Cabrera played for the Nats in 2019, and played a versatile and depth role in their world series run. The Nats signing both Cabrera and Starlin Castro gives them options in the infield should top free agent Josh Donaldson pass up Washington in free agency. The Nats have Cabrera, Castro, and potentially top prospect Carter Kieboom able to play multiple positions in the infield, giving Washington flexibility.

Cabrera's $2.5 million deal can rise to $3 million in bonuses based on a number of plate appearances. After signing with the Nats in August, he had 46 RBI in 146 plate appearances. For the entirety of 2019, he hit .26 with 19 homers and 91 RBI split between the Nats and the Texas Rangers. Cabrera has a career .268 average with 180 homers and 796 RBI in 13 big league seasons. Cabrera also played 49 games for Washington in the 2014 season after being acquired from the Cleveland Indians. He made the all star game in 2011 and 2012.
