The Boston Red Sox have signed C Kevin Plawecki to a one year, $900,000 deal, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. Plawecki will become incumbent C Christian Vazquez's backup in Boston. The Red Sox have been searching for a backup catcher since they traded Sandy Leon to the Cleveland Indians. Ironically, Leon will be replacing Plawecki in Cleveland, and Plawecki will be replacing Leon in Boston.

Plawecki was drafted 35th overall by the New York Mets in the 2012 draft. He was a top 100 prospect in the Mets organization, and debuted in 2015. He didn't have the bat that he was hyped to, hitting .218 in 3 seasons with the Mets before they traded him to Cleveland last winter. He didn't do much better in Cleveland, hitting .222 with 3 homers and 17 RBI. Plawecki has always been consistent as a defensive catcher, where he ranked near the top in the fielding runs above average stat category. He is also well regarded as a good teammate in the clubhouse.
