The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers have completed a reworked trade involving OF Mookie Betts, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Betts and David Price go to Los Angeles along with cash considerations, while OF Alex Verdugo, IF Jeter Downs, and C Connor Wong go to Boston. The Red Sox are getting additional prospects from the Dodgers due to the Minnesota Twins backing out of the original deal due to concerns with Twins top prospect RHP Brusdar Graterol.

Betts had a solid 2019 with the Red Sox, hitting .295 with 29 homers and 80 RBI in 150 games played. In his career, Betts is a .301 hitter with 170 homers and 470 RBI in 794 games played across 6 major league seasons. The Dodgers are paying all $27 million owed to Betts in 2020 as well as $48 million of the $96 million owed to Price over the remainder of his contract. Price went 7-5 in 2019 with a 4.28 ERA across 22 starts in 2019. Price had his season cut short due to a cyst in his left wrist that ended his season in August. Price has a career 150-80 record with a 3.31 ERA across 321 games in his career, with 311 of them coming as starts. Price has played for the Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Tampa Bay Rays in his 12 major league seasons.

The Red Sox get Verdugo, a talented young outfielder from the Dodgers. Verdugo hit .294 with 12 homers and 44 RBI over 106 games played for the Dodgers in 2019. In his 3 year major league career, Verdugo is a .282 hitter with 14 homers and 49 RBI in 158 games played. Verdugo will likely be the starting right fielder for the Red Sox on opening day instead of Betts. Downs is a 21 year old infield prospect who can play all over the infield, except first base. Downs hit .276 with 24 homers and 86 RBI across the Single A and Double A level. Downs is also speedy, stealing 24 bases last year. Wong hit .281 with 24 homers and 82 RBI across Single and Double A. Wong stole 11 bases and had 31 extra base hits.
