MLB transaction freeze expected

The Major League Baseball Player's Association(MLBPA) recently sent a memo to player agencies about how roster transactions and player payments will be handled, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The MLBPA has to figure out how to pay players as a result of the delayed regular season opening due to the Coronavirus(COVID-19) Pandemic. According to Rosenthal, a transaction and signing freeze is expected to be in effect soon. In a freeze such as this, teams can not trade, release, or sign any player.

Any freeze entering effect would be lifted when the MLB and MLBPA decides it is safe to begin spring training workouts again to prepare for a delayed opening day. The MLBPA is looking to enforce the freeze due to several players on Spring Training rosters having March opt-out clauses that have been nullified in all effect. Spring Training camps were suspended immediately on Friday and all spring training games were cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Teams have also been encouraged to stop group workouts.

The MLBPA is willing to pay $1,100 per week until April 9 to players who have returned to either their offseason home or their team's home city. It would cover the cost of living allowances for players. This sum applies to anyone who was on a 40 man roster as of March 13 and certain non roster invitees(NRI) to spring training. NRI's who weren't on MLB rosters to end the 2019 season will not be paid by the MLBPA. This is just one of the things the MLB and MLBPA are in discussions about as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
