MLB looking to have season plan in place by end of May

While plans for the 2020 MLB season are still up in the air, a timeline appears to be coming into the fold. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is still optimistic that MLB can get a 2020 season going, and that the league views the end of May as a deadline to have a plan for the season in place, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. This reported deadline is a soft one, they don't necessarily have to have a plan in place by the end of May, but that's what everyone would like to have happen.

If a plan were to be in place by the end of May, players would be reporting for three weeks of a ramp up or second spring training period in June, while the regular season would start in July. All 30 teams would play somewhere in between 80-100 games of regular season play, which would have the regular season stretch into October. Neutral and warm weather sites would then host world series games in November.

Previously, Manfred was hopeful that the regular season would get underway in mid May, but since that is only weeks away and there are no plans close to materializing, that very likely won't be the case. Manfred sent a letter to league employees last week, saying that "While I fully anticipate that baseball will resume this season, it is very difficult to predict with any accuracy the timeline for the resumption of our season."

Various ideas have been brought to the table as to how the regular season could take place. Those ideas include playing the entire season in Arizona, starting the season in Arizona and finishing in the normal home cities, playing the whole season in Arizona and Florida, and a 3 state system of Arizona, Florida, and Texas, with players living in isolation involved in every plan. Because of the uncertainty regarding the major league season, the minor league seasons could be cancelled altogether due to MLB's probable need for increased roster size to help prevent injuries from a shortened preparation period.
