Offseason report: Miami Marlins

Heading back to Florida, the Miami Marlins offseason is profiled.

2019 recap
The Marlins are in the midst of a rebuild, so 2019 was pretty forgettable for the Marlins. The team sputtered all season long, limping across the finish line with a 57-105 record.

What you need to know
As with any rebuilding team, the Marlins kept costs low this offseason, although some notable names were brought in. They started with a trade for a resurgent Jonathan Villar to lock down second base, and they claimed Jesus Aguilar off waivers the same day. Then they signed an old power bat in Matt Kemp for some outfield competition. They started off 2020 by signing a low risk high reward outfielder in Corey Dickerson on a two year deal. They then signed an old veteran catcher in Francisco Cervelli for some leadership in the locker room. They went to the trade market next and nabbed some bullpen help in Stephen Tarpley from the Yankees. Then they brought in old vets in Brad Boxberger, Matt Joyce, and Sean Rodriguez to wrap up the winter.

Moves I like
Boxberger has the potential to have a resurgent year in Miami, plus he can serve in the back end of the bullpen. At his worst in 2019, Tarpley was still serviceable for the Yankees. Villar is a cornerstone of the infield and should play the majority of the season at second, but can slot in all over the infield if need be. Aguilar and Kemp are low risk adds in the hope they can re-discover their power strokes. Dickerson has incredible value, but he's injury prone, so keeping him healthy is key.

Moves I don't like
It's been shown repeatedly over the last few seasons that Cervelli has nothing left in the tank, so his acquisition is a bit strange. Rodriguez hasn't been any good in almost 5 years, and Joyce is a outfielder in the midst of a hard drop off in ability.

2020 outlook
As with any rebuilding team, it will most likely be a forgettable year in Miami. The young prospects will start arriving this year though, so there's that to look forward too. Besides that, it's looking to be another long summer in South Florida.
