During the 2020 ESPY awards last night, Minnesota Twins DH Nelson Cruz was honored for his humanitarian service with an award. Cruz was awarded the 2020 Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award for his work in his hometown of Las Matas De Santa Cruz in the Dominican Republic. He also has done work with the Minneapolis-St.Paul community.

Cruz has created many helpful initiatives, which include donating equipment and funding for health care in the Dominican, along with law enforcement and education infrastructure in Latin America. He also hosted a clinic for the Twins RBI All Stars last year in Minnesota. Cruz received $100,000 for winning the award, which he will be using in his foundation, the Boomstick23 foundation, which he uses for his charity work in the Dominican, as well as the Minneapolis area.

Twins president and CEO Dave St.Peter said in a statement that "Over our 60 years in Minnesota, the Twins have been incredibly blessed to have had so many great players who happen to be even better people. Nelson Cruz is a shining example. Through his work in the Dominican Republic, Twins Territory and beyond, Nellie continues to touch countless lives. He lives our organizational pillars of passion, hustle, heart and fun each and every day, and we are incredibly proud to have Nelson Cruz as part of our Minnesota Twins family."
