Extra innings changes in the works for 2020

If the MLB and the MLBPA agree to a deal for the resumption of the 2020 season, things could look a lot different. Both sides have already agreed to implement the universal DH, and baserunning changes could be next. If a game goes to extra innings, a baserunner will start the inning on second base to try and speed up the game, according to Ronald Blum of The Associated Press.

MLB hopes to extend this rule beyond the 2020 season if it proves successful. In his tenure, commissioner Rob Manfred has added several measures to try and speed up game times in baseball, such as a limit of 6 mound visits, and more recently, a 3 batter minimum for pitchers in order to keep the game moving with fewer mound visits and pitching changes.

The MLBPA also appears to be in favor of having games end in ties after a certain amount of innings, which would prevent games from dragging on in extra innings, like the 19 inning game the St.Louis Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks played in last year, or the 17 inning game the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins were apart of in June.

Both the MLB and the MLBPA have been negotiating all week to try and get a deal done for the season. The MLBPA is expected to vote sometime in the next few days on the MLB's 60 game proposal they submitted earlier this week.
