MLB to implement 2020 season

MLB is almost ready to get going on the 2020 season. A few hours after the MLBPA rejected the MLB’s latest 60 game proposal, the MLB announced that every team’s owner voted to proceed with the 2020 season under the terms of the agreement the MLB and the MLBPA came to on March 26 when the COVID-19 Pandemic had just set in worldwide.

The MLB is asking the MLBPA for a few things before implementing the season. They want to know if the players association will agree to some health and safety measures, and they want to know if players can report to spring training with a week’s notice. Spring training would likely begin around July 1 if the season is implemented in the coming days.

Under the agreement on March 26, there will be a universal DH only for 2020, instead of 2020 and 2021 like the MLB had wanted. This also takes away the possibility of expanded playoffs for 2020 and 2021 because the two sides couldn’t agree to a deal. The extra inning changes I mentioned a few days ago may not happen either. Players still have the option to opt out of playing this season. Because the two sides didn’t come to a deal, the MLBPA can still file a grievance against the MLB for taking this long.

MLB released a statement, which says:
“Today, the Major League Baseball Players Association informed us that they have rejected the agreement framework developed by commissioner Manfred and Tony Clark. In view of this rejection, the MLB clubs have unanimously voted to proceed with the 2020 season. In order to produce a schedule with a specific number of games, we are asking the players association provide us by 5:00 PM EST on Tuesday with two pieces of information. The first is whether players will be able to report to camp within seven days. The second is whether the players association will agree on the operating manual which contains the health and safety protocols necessary to give us the best opportunity to conduct and complete our regular season and postseason.”

It may have taken a while, but we are finally going to get Major League Baseball games in 2020.
