St.Louis Cardinals RHP Jordan Hicks has opted out of playing in 2020, according to the team. Hicks opted out, citing pre-existing health conditions. Hicks is a type 1 Diabetic. Due to his diabetes, Hicks is placed in the at risk group of players, and as such, will receive full prorated pay and service time for this season despite opting out.

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said in a statement that "We respect and understand Jordan's decision to opt out this season, we wish him well as he continues his recovery from elbow surgery, and we look forward to seeing Jordan back on the mound for the 2021 season."

Hicks was on his way to having a fantastic 2019 for the Cardinals, when he ran into an arm injury and required Tommy John surgery, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season. The way his recovery was running course, he likely would've been able to pitch this season. Prior to the surgery, Hicks had developed a reputation of a pitcher who could repeatedly touch 100 mph and over with his fastball, and had taken over closing duties for the Cardinals.
