Colorado Rockies OF Ian Desmond will be opting out of playing in the 2020 MLB season, according to an announcement on Desmond's Instagram page. In the post, Desmond said he will be staying home with his family rather than putting himself at risk of contracting COVID-19 in a shortened regular season.

In the post, Desmond said that "With a pregnant wife and four young children who have lots of questions about what's going on in the world, home is where I need to be right now, home for my wife, Chelsey. Home to help. Home to guide. Home to answer my older three boys' questions about coronavirus and civil rights and life. Home to be their dad."

Desmond also talked about the state of baseball right now, saying that "Think about it: Right now in baseball we've got a labor war, we've got rampant individualism on the field. In clubhouses, we've got racist, sexist, homophobic jokes or flat-out problems. We've got cheating. We've got a minority issue from the top down. One African American GM. Two African American managers. Less than 8% Black players. No Black majority team owners."

In 2019, Desmond hit .255 with 20 homers and 65 RBI for the Rockies. With Desmond announcing he is opting out, he becomes the 4th player to do so, joining Arizona Diamondbacks RHP Mike Leake, Washington Nationals 1B Ryan Zimmerman, and Nationals RHP Joe Ross.
