The Philadelphia Phillies have hired Dave Dombrowski as their president of baseball operations, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman. The two sides had been in communication recently, but the talks hadn't ramped up until this morning, with both sides having extreme interest. Dombrowski's deal is for 4 years and $20 million, and the Phillies have confirmed the deal.

Dombrowski has been one of baseball's top executives in the last 20+ years, leading the wild card Florida Marlins to a world series title in 1997, the Detroit Tigers to multiple appearances in the world series in the early 2010's, and the Boston Red Sox to a world series in 2018, despite the controversy surrounding that title due to minor sign stealing by the Red Sox in the 2018 regular season.

Dombrowski has had a history of trading prospects and draining the farm system where he has gone in order to produce a winner quickly, but the Phillies don't have a very loaded farm system to begin with, so Dombrowski will have his work cut out for him on the trade market, as well as free agency. The Phillies have claimed that they have lost millions of dollars due to the short 2020 season with no fans in the stands, so Dombrowski could be working on a smaller budget.

Dombrowski has recently been involved with an MLB expansion group in Nashville, TN, after he was fired by the Red Sox in 2019, and was focused on building a baseball team in Nashville, but after talking with Phillies owner John Middleton and president Andy McPhail, he started developing interest in joining them. The Phillies had been looking for a new president of baseball operations since Matt Klentak was re-assigned roles at the end of the season.
