The Detroit Tigers have signed OF Robbie Grossman to a two year, $10 million deal, according to The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen. Grossman's contract also incudes an additional $500,000 in bonuses based on playing time, according to Stavenhagen. This is the first time the Tigers have signed a free agent to a multi year contract since the 2015 offseason, when they signed 4 players to multi year deals. The Tigers have confirmed the deal.

Grossman spent the 2020 season with the Oakland Athletics, putting up a .241 average with 8 homers and 23 RBI with a .826 OPS in 51 games played for the Athletics in the short season. In his 8 major league seasons, Grossman has a .252 average with a .730 OPS, hitting 50 homers and 254 RBI in 726 games played. Grossman has spent his career with the Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins, and the Athletics.

Grossman said of signing with the Tigers that "I’ve been fortunate to play for some great franchises during my career, and I couldn’t be happier to add the Tigers to that list. I've been in Detroit a number of times as a visiting player, and know how passionate the city and its fans are for Tigers baseball. I’m very excited to get to work with my coaches and teammates, and help bring winning baseball back to the Motor City."

Tigers GM Al Avila said in a statement of the Grossman signing that "Robbie is a proven Major League hitter and will bring consistent, competitive at-bats to our lineup. His name quickly came up when our front office began planning potential offseason additions, and all of us are looking forward to having his veteran presence both on the field and in the clubhouse."

The switch hitting Grossman will compete for a regular role in the Tigers outfield, competing with Christin Stewart, Daz Cameron, Victor Reyes, and rule 5 draft choice Akil Baddoo. OF Troy Stokes Jr was DFA'd to make room for Grossman on the 40 man roster.
