The Seattle Mariners just made a good addition to their bullpen, even though he won't be able to help the team in 2021. The Mariners have signed RHP Ken Giles to a two year contract, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. Giles will make $7 million over two seasons, with a $500,000 signing bonus attached. There is also a $9.5 million option for the 2023 season, with a $500,000 buyout. Giles can max out the contract at 3 years and $19 million, with incentives included. The Mariners have confirmed the contract.

Giles will be out for the entirety of the 2021 regular season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery on October 1 in 2020. Giles is currently rehabbing and is expected to be ready for opening day in the 2022 regular season. Giles is expected to boost a Mariners bullpen with a AL worst 5.92 ERA last season.

Giles spent the 2020 season in the Toronto Blue Jays bullpen. Before he was shut down with an arm injury, he posted a 0-0 record with a rather high 9.82 ERA, striking out 6 hitters in 3 2/3 innings, getting one save in 4 appearances before being shut down. In his 7 seasons, Giles has a 14-18 with a 2.74 ERA, saving 115 games and throwing 351 innings in 357 relief appearances.

Giles last fully healthy season came as the Blue Jays closer in 2019, when he racked up 23 saves with a stellar 1.87 ERA in 53 appearances. Giles also has valuable postseason experience to add to the young Mariners, in addition to his closing expertise. Giles was on the Houston Astros from 2016 to the trade deadline in 2018, and he was a big factor in the Astros world series win in 2017, saving 34 games with a 2.30 ERA in 63 games.

The Mariners have added several relievers this offseason that are similar to Giles, in the sense that they have all had Tommy John surgery. Rafael Montero, Kendall Graveman, and Keynan Middleton have all been brought in this winter, and all have had Tommy John surgery. They also acquired RHP Andres Munoz from the San Diego Padres at the 2020 trade deadline, who is eyeing a June return from Tommy John surgery.
