Rays Choi to undergo surgery

One of the more recognizable faces in the Tampa Bay Rays lineup has suffered a setback. Rays 1B Ji-Man Choi will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and will be out for at least a month, according to manager Kevin Cash. The early expectation is that he will be out for 3-5 weeks.

Choi's right knee has been bugging him ever since spring training started in mid February. Soreness of that knee kept him out of daily workouts at the start of camp. After that, he was able to return, and suited up for 5 games, where he got 4 hits out of 11 at bats. However, a few weeks ago, his knee got tight, and he has been out of game action ever since.

Cash said of Choi's rehab that "We’re going to really need Ji-Man to work hard throughout the rehab process, while he’s rehabbing his knee, to get the rest of his body in as good a shape as possible to speed that up so we can see him back on the field, in the lineup for us quickly."

When the tightness returned to Choi's knee, he got a cortisone shot in an attempt to relieve it. He was ramping up his workouts last week, and was eyeing an activation from the 10 day IL, participating in some on field activities. On Monday, though, Choi said that he had additional soreness in his knee, which prompted the Rays to shut him down.

The Rays do have options to replace Choi's production at first, because they can plug holes anywhere in the roster. Yandy Diaz and Yoshi Tsutsugo will see their first base reps increase as a result of Choi's injury, and Mike Brosseau could also get some reps at first until Choi returns.
