One of the big power hitters in the Yankees lineup has been struck with the injury bug. 1B Luke Voit has suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee, according to an announcement by the team. An MRI revealed the tear, and Voit will undergo surgery on the knee, which will shut him down for 3 weeks.

Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge said of the injury to Voit that "Luke is a big part of this team, a big part of this offense. He brings a lot to the table, a guy that’s going to hit in the middle of this lineup, hits for power and uses the whole field. He’s a vocal guy in the clubhouse and gets us motivated, so we’re going to be missing out on that for at least a month."

Voit got the MRI on Friday, which revealed the tear, and was given the option of playing through it, but he didn't choose that one, he's getting the surgery. Voit will be shut down until about mid-April, where he can begin recovery and rehab in a baseball setting, and will likely return to the lineup in May if all goes well.

Manager Aaron Boone said of the injury that "Functionally, he was playing, but he was still dealing with some swelling in there after games. I felt like calendar-wise, it was best to get this over with and taken care of and hopefully put it behind him for the bulk of the season. Three weeks is not that far off, so we’ll see. Let's have the surgery, see how the early days are and then we’ll be able to evaluate."

The Yankees announced that non roster invite to spring camp Jay Bruce has made the team and will serve as the primary first basemen in the absence of Voit. Mike Ford will likely be backing up Bruce at first.
