Oakland Athletics first baseman Seth Brown has stepped up lately, to the tune of some clutch hits. He did it again Saturday afternoon. Brown hit a homer, Austin Allen homered, and the Athletics defeated the Tampa Bay Rays with a 6-3 win Saturday afternoon. Brown also contributed an RBI single.

In the first, Brown hit a two run homer, and Allen hit a solo homer in the second inning to make it 3-0 Athletics. In the 6th, Brandon Lowe hit a two run homer to make it a 3-2 lead for the A's. In the 7th, Brown hit an RBI single to make it 4-2. In the 8th, Mike Zunino hit an RBI single for the Rays, and Elvis Andrus hit an RBI double, and Tony Kemp scored on an error to make it 6-3.

Oakland manager Bob Melvin had high praise of Brown after the game, saying that "He’s been unbelievable. The last two days, if we don’t have him, good chance we don’t win the game. He’s stepped up big for us not only in these last two games, but since he’s been here."

Frankie Montas got the win for the A's, allowing two runs on 5 hits and two walks, striking out 6 hitters in 5 1/3 innings pitched. Yusmeiro Petit and Jake Diekman pitched after Montas left, and Lou Trivino got the save in the 9th, his 6th of the season.

Melvin said of Trivino's save that "When you have a tough outing and you go back out there and the challenges pop up again and you get through it, you’re better for it. We all know what kind of stuff Lou has. He’s had a terrific year to this point. He had one tough game the other day and had to get the cobwebs off that. I think this outing will do it for him.

Tyler Glasnow got the loss for the Rays, allowing 3 runs on two hits and 4 walks, racking up 11 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Cody Reed, Hunter Strickland, and Ryan Thompson pitched in relief of Glasnow, each getting charged with one run.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said of the loss that "They got one across and we'd get one back. You've just got to be really clean in those innings and unfortunately we weren't. I'm happy with the way the guys were competing, I totally understand and recognize but the hitting's going to come around it's just been kind of quiet here lately."

Tampa Bay and Oakland end their series today, with Cole Irvin starting for the A's, and Shane McClanahan going for the Rays.
