Seeking an upgrade in the starting rotation, the Minnesota Twins once again went to the Cincinnati well. The Twins have acquired RHP Tyler Mahle from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for 2B/3B Spencer Steer, LHP Steve Hajjar, and 3B/1B Christian Encarnacion-Strand, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

This trade is the second time in 5 months that the Twins have made a deal with the Reds. The Twins acquired both Sonny Gray and Francis Peguero from the Reds in exchange for Chase Petty. Now, just a few days after trading Luis Castillo, Mahle is now gone too for the Reds, who also traded Brandon Drury and Tommy Pham.

So far with the 4th place Reds this season, Mahle has a 5-7 record with a 4.40 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 3.60 FIP. Mahle has struck out 114 hitters while walking 39, tossing 104 1/3 innings, making 19 starts for the Reds.

For his career, spanning 6 years with the Reds, Mahle has a 31-38 record with a 4.35 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Mahle has fanned 637 hitters while throwing 593 2/3 innings, making 113 starts and one relief appearance in his career, not making any playoff appearances yet.

The headliner for the Reds is Steer, who is the 7th ranked prospect in the Twins system, according to MLB Pipeline. With Double A Wichita and Triple A St. Paul this season, Steer has a .269 batting average with a .889 OPS, hitting 20 home runs to go with 62 RBI's, adding 3 stolen bases in 83 games so far.

Also coming back to the Twins is Hajjar, the 18th ranked prospect in the Twins system. With Low A Fort Myers this season, Hajjar has a 2-2 record with a 2.89 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, tossing 43 2/3 innings across 12 starts so far.

The final piece for the Twins is Encarnacion-Strand, who is the 23rd ranked prospect in the Twins system. With High A Cedar Rapids and Double A Wichita this season, Encarnacion-Strand has a .302 batting average and .987 OPS, hitting 25 home runs to go with 85 RBI's, stealing 8 bases in 87 games this season.

By acquiring Mahle, the Twins round out their starting rotation, which currently includes Joe Ryan, Chris Archer, Dylan Bundy, and Gray. The Reds get a trio of prospects in return as they accelerate their rebuild with this trade deadline.
