Tatis Jr has second wrist surgery

Even when he's not on the field and his team is in the NLCS, Fernando Tatis Jr keeps making headlines. The Padres announced that Tatis Jr, their star shortstop, had surgery on his left wrist last week.

In March, Tatis Jr initially needed surgery after fracturing his scaphoid bone in an offseason motorcycle accident. In that surgery, multiple screws were inserted into his wrist. After the Padres had concerns about how the first surgery would hold up long term, a second surgery was conducted that removed the original screws and replaced them with one central screw.

The surgery on Tatis Jr isn't expected to interfere with his offseason progressions, and he should be fully recovered when spring training starts. Tatis Jr is currently serving an 80 game PED suspension after a banned substance appeared on a drug test during a minor league rehab assignment in August for Triple A El Paso.

San Diego president of baseball operations AJ Preller said of the surgery that "We were expecting him to be ready to go for spring training. The timing of the shoulder surgery and the wrist follow-up surgery should line up with the same timeline. He should be able to go for spring training."

Tatis Jr will be eligible to return from his suspension early in the 2023 season. He was suspended for 80 games on August 12, and the Padres postseason games count towards his suspension, meaning he's served 55 games prior to the NLCS beginning. Tatis Jr also had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder last month.

In 2021, Tatis Jr played 130 games for the Padres, making the NL All Star Team while hitting an NL leading 42 home runs and driving in 97 runs.
