Early offseason decisions are afoot in California. Infielder Max Muncy and the Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to a two year, $24 million contract extension, according to an announcement by the team on Thursday.
Muncy had already been under contract for 2024 with the Dodgers, but that now gets nullified. He gets a $5 million signing bonus in 2024 with a $7 million salary. He'll make $12 million in 2025 and there is a $10 million team option for 2026. There are also incentives for plate appearances.
Last season was a productive one in the power department for Muncy. He had a .212 batting average, .333 on base percentage, and .475 slugging percentage, blasting 36 home runs with 17 doubles and 105 RBI's in 135 games. He had two hits in 12 at bats in 3 playoff games.
The Dodgers had 4 players surpass the 100 RBI mark in 2023, with Muncy, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and JD Martinez doing so, the first time the Dodgers had 4 players get 100 RBI's in a season. His 36 home runs tied a career high.
Muncy has played in 8 seasons in the majors, two with the Oakland Athletics and 6 with the Dodgers. In that time, he has racked up a .227 batting average, .351 on base percentage, and .473 slugging percentage, hitting 180 home runs, 118 doubles, and 489 RBI's in 847 games. Muncy has a .234 batting average and .389 on base percentage with 10 home runs and 29 RBI's in 46 playoff games.
Since joining the Dodgers in 2018, Muncy has played in at least 100 games in each of the 5 full seasons played. He's been a consistent power threat as well, hitting over 30 home runs in 4 of the 5 full seasons, with the only outlier being a 21 home run season in 2022.
With Muncy locked up, the Dodgers turn their attention to their free agents. Kike Hernandez, Amed Rosario, Ryan Brasier, Martinez, David Peralta, Jason Heyward, Jake Marisnick, Kolten Wong, Daniel Hudson, Clayton Kershaw, Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly, and Shelby Miller could all hit free agency.
