A little shakeup was in order for these teams. The Cleveland Guardians have acquired RHP Scott Barlow from the San Diego Padres in exchange for RHP Enyel De Los Santos, according to announcements from both teams.

Ahead of the non tender deadline, this trade was made as both teams swapped relief pitchers. Barlow is projected to earn $7.1 million in arbitration, while De Los Santos is projected to make $1.2 million this offseason.

Barlow spent 2023 with the Padres and Kansas City Royals, being dealt to San Diego ahead of the trade deadline. He posted a 4.37 ERA, 3.42 FIP, and 1.397 WHIP, appearing in 63 games and picking up 13 saves in 68 innings pitched.

Cleveland president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said that "We did not perform as well in the late innings and lost a lot of those close games. So, what we were hoping to do is add another leverage reliever that can help us when those games are tight. It gives us another option on the days when Emmanuel isn’t available or maybe a little bit fatigued, we have another option to go to back there."

The acquisition of Barlow comes on the heels of some late inning troubles for the Guardians in 2023. After leading through 7 innings, the Guardians lost 10 games. In games decided in or after the 7th inning, the Guardians were 29-34. The hope is that Barlow can provide another high leverage arm.

Barlow has been in the majors for 6 seasons, spending the time between the Royals and Padres. In that time, he has accumulated a 3.36 ERA, 3.29 FIP, and 1.247 WHIP, averaging 3.6 walks per 9 innings and 10.7 strikeouts per 9, throwing 332 innings over 302 appearances.

Going to the Padres in return is De Los Santos, who spent 2016 and 2017 in the Padres minor league system before he was traded for Freddy Galvis. He made his major league debut in 2018 and signed with the Guardians as a minor league free agent ahead of the 2022 season. Despite walk issues, he's been a largely reliable pitcher out of the bullpen.

De Los Santos saw a lot of action out of the Guardians bullpen in 2023. He compiled a 3.29 ERA, 1.142 WHIP, and 3.48 FIP, averaging 9.8 strikeouts per 9 and 3.7 walks per 9 over 65 2/3 innings and 70 appearances as the Guardians finished in 3rd in the AL Central.

In De Los Santos, the Padres are getting a hard throwing righty who is stingy against right handed batters. Using a 3 pitch mix consisting of a fastball, changeup, and slider, De Los Santos held righties to a .171 average against him in 2023.

Since debuting in 2018, De Los Santos has pitched for the Phillies, Guardians, and Pittsburgh Pirates in the majors. He has posted a 4.20 ERA, 1.291 WHIP, and 3.92 FIP, averaging 3.6 walks per 9 and 9.5 strikeouts per 9, starting 3 games and appearing in 162 more out of the bullpen, throwing 184 1/3 innings. He has pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings in the playoffs, all in 2022.

As the Guardians acquired Barlow, they announced that they agreed to a contract with Ramon Laureano for 2024, avoiding arbitration. The Padres non tendered Austin Nola, Tim Hill, Taylor Kohlwey, and Jose Espada.
