Talk about an offensive explosion. Ivan Herrera drove in two runs, Nolan Arenado homered, and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Los Angeles Angels with a 10-5 victory Monday night in Anaheim.

The Cardinals got off on the right foot to open this series, though it didn't appear that way at first. Shut out through 6 innings, it appeared as if another loss was in order for the team. All it took was a 8 run showing in the 7th inning to wind up in the win column, turning the game on its head.

Arenado said of the Cardinals big inning that "It was great to see us rally and come back and have a big inning. It seems like that’s the way we’re scoring runs. It couldn’t have come at a better time. We didn’t give in as the game went on, so that was really good."

Kyren Paris got the Angels on the board in the 3rd inning, hitting a double to center field that brought home Zach Neto to make it 1-0. Paris then scored on an infield single from Nolan Schanuel plus a throwing error to make it 2-0. Kevin Pillar put the exclamation point on the 3rd for the Angels, making it 4-0 with a two run home run to left field.

In the 7th, Arenado got the party started for the Cardinals with a solo home run. Nolan Gorman then scored on an RBI single from Masyn Winn to make it 4-2. Matt Carpenter tied the game 4-4 with a two run single. Winn and Carpenter scored on a hit by pitch and walk with the bases loaded to make it 6-4. Herrera then added a two run single to make it 8-4 Cardinals.

Pillar got the Angels another run in the 8th inning, making it an 8-5 game with an RBI single that scored Jo Adell. In the 9th inning, Arenado and Nolan Gorman scored on a force out and throwing error, making it a 10-5 game.

Carpenter said of the 8 run inning in the 7th that "It was exciting. We had a lot of good at-bats and took advantage of opportunities when we got them. It was just good to see us keep the line moving. It’s something that’s been missing as an offense, and it was great to see."

Matthew Liberatore started for the Cardinals and allowed 4 runs in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Kyle Leahy got the win by pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings. John King added 1 2/3 innings before Ryan Fernandez, Andrew Kittredge, and Nick Robertson sealed the win for the Cardinals.

Jose Soriano took the mound for the Angels, pitching 5 1/3 shutout innings while striking out 6 hitters. It all went downhill for the Angels after that. Adam Cimber was charged with 3 runs, Matt Moore was charged with the loss as he gave up 4 runs, Luis Garcia allowed one, and Jose Suarez allowed one in two innings.

Game two of the series is on Tuesday night. The Cardinals will go for the series win as Sonny Gray takes the mound, while Reid Detmers starts for the Angels as they try to tie the series up.
