Mets and Degrom agree to extension

The New York Mets and ace RHP Jacob Degrom have agreed to a five year extension, reported by Andy Martino. The deal is reportedly worth $137.5 million. This extension replaces Degrom's current contract, which would pay him $17 million this season. This deal covers Degrom's arbitration eligible years and has an opt out after the 2022 season, and a team option for 2024. If the option is picked up, it will be a 6 year deal worth $170 million, according to Jeff Passan.

Degrom led the majors with a 1.70 ERA last season, and won the NL Cy Young award in a landslide. He went only 10-9 due to poor run support, but struck out 269 batters in 32 starts last season. His teammate and fellow dominant pitcher Noah Syndergaard expressed his frustration will Degrom's contract negotiations on Sunday, saying that "Jake's the best pitcher in baseball right now. I think he deserves whatever amount he's worth. I want to keep him happy, so when it does come time for him to reach free agency, he stays on our side pitching for the Mets. I just think they should quit all this fuss and pay the man already." Looks like Syndergaard got his wish.
