Snell extended by Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays and RHP Blake Snell have agreed to a 5 year, $50 million extension, reported by Mark Feinsand. Jeff Passan reports there are no opt outs in the deal. Snell's deal begins this season, and it is the largest contract given to a player before they reached arbitration.

Snell, who won the AL Cy Young, voiced his displeasure with the Rays after they only gave him a $15,500 raise earlier this month, saying that "Other teams adequately compensate their players". Snell also said that he was surprised when the Rays approached him with the extension, saying that "I told them what I wanted and this was the only way it was going to happen and they met my way," Snell said. "... I'm very happy." Last year, he went 21-5 with a 1.89 ERA in 180 2/3 innings for the Rays, who won 90 games last year. Snell will start opening day for the Rays.
