Verlander gets extended by 'Stros

The Houston Astros have agreed to a 3 year deal to keep RHP Justin Verlander in Houston through the 2021 season. The deal will begin this year. Verlander is owed $28 million this season, and the two years of his new contract will pay him $66 million, according to Jon Heyman. It is one of the most expensive contracts in MLB history by average annual value(AAV). Verlander will make $31.3 million a year over the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

The 36 year old Verlander is coming off one of his best seasons ever, finishing second in AL Cy Young voting, which was won by Blake Snell. Verlander's contract comes after the Astros extended both Alex Bregman and Ryan Pressly this offseason. The Astros are also interested in extending Gerrit Cole, who is set to become a free agent after this season. Cole has denied rumors of negotiations taking place.
