Angels avoid sweep, end Yanks winning streak


   Tommy LaStella and Kole Calhoun homered in the 5th inning, David Fletcher drove in 5 runs, and the Los Angeles Angels rolled over the Yankees 11-5 last night. LaStella's homer was his 7th on the season, tying Mike Trout and Calhoun for the team lead. LaStella had never hit more than 5 homers previously. Fletcher hit a go-ahead 2 run single in the 6th inning and a 3 run triple in the 7th, when the Angels took control.

   Gio Urshela homered for the Yankees and Masahiro Tanaka rolled right through the first 4 innings before getting pounded in the 5th. It was Tanaka's first loss to the Angels in 7 starts, after entering with a 1.59 ERA against the Angels. Tanaka gave up 6 runs on 6 hits over 5 2/3 innings, with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. After DJ Lemahieu hit an RBI single and Urshela homered in the 4th, the Yankees made it 4-0 in the 5th after a wild pitch and RBI single.

   Jonathan Lucroy singled to lead off the 5th, and then LaStella hit a 2-run homer to right-center field. With one out, Luis Rengifo singled for his first big league hit, and then Calhoun followed with a 2-run blast for his 6th homer. Fletcher singled in 2 more runs in the 6th and tripled home 3 in the 7th.

   Tanaka walked 2 batters in the 6th before Jonathan Holder replaced him, who gave up Fletcher's two run single. This game is the pinstripes 9th loss after leading this year. After losing 9 of 10, the Angels got a much needed win, led by Trevor Cahill, who gave up 4 runs and 6 hits over 4+ innings with 4 walks. Reliever Noe Ramirez pitched 2 scoreless innings as well to get the win.
