Burdi collapses with arm injury

Pittsburgh Pirates RHP Nick Burdi left yesterday's game against Arizona after suffering some type of arm injury. In the top of the 8th, with the Pirates down 9-4, Burdi threw a pitch to D-Backs leadoff man Jarrod Dyson and immediately clutched his arm after he threw the pitch, and went to the ground. Manager Clint Hurdle said after the game that "It just takes the breath right out of you." The Pirates announced that Burdi was pulled from the game due to right elbow and bicep pain.

The team's director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said that the team is "gathering information to get the most definitive diagnosis as to what's going on." Burdi, who was a rule 5 pick, was enjoying a good start to the season, with a 4.32 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 18.4 strikeouts per nine innings over 10 appearances. Burdi has a history of arm trouble, as he had Tommy John surgery 2 years ago while pitching for the Minnesota Twins. Francisco Liriano replaced Burdi after he exited. The Pirates went on to lose 12-4.
