Cubs roll past Dodgers, move above .500

Jose Quintana had a terrific outing, and the Chicago Cubs used the help of a fast start to take down the Dodgers, 7-2. "He was once again on top of his game, great focus, kept coming back with good pitches.'' Those are the words manage Joe Maddon used to describe Quintana's outing. The Cubbies had a 4 run first inning, capitalized by Wilson Contreras' 3 run double, and Anthony Rizzo added a 2 run home run in the second.

That was enough support for Quintana, who went 7 innings, while giving up 2 runs and only 4 hits, improving to 3-0 with a beauty 0.86 ERA since he was jumped on by the Milwaukee Brewers on April 5. This is the Cubs' 6th win in their last 7 games. Quintana said that ''I know I've been throwing the ball really well the last three starts, threw really good, all my stuff working really good." The NL West leading Dodgers had won 7 of 8, but couldn't recover after the early struggles of Kenta Maeda.

In the first inning, Javier Baez walked to load the bases. After Kyle Schwarber struck out, Contreras ripped a double down the 3rd base line, clearing the bases. Daniel Descalso then doubled Contreras in, making it 4-0 Chicago early. Rizzo hit an opposite field home run in the second inning, finding the left field bleachers, making it 6-0 Cubs. The next batter up, Baez, hit a grounder to 1B David Freese, and Baez juked inside to avoid the tag of Freese, reaching the base and causing the Wrigley Field crowd to go insane.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts argued that Baez was out of the baseline when he avoided the tag, but the call stood and Baez remained on first base. The Dodgers wasted some late chances to get back into the game. Max Muncy struck out on Quintana's 114th pitch to end the 7th, leaving 2 runners on base, and with the bases loaded in the 8th, AJ Pollock struck out and Cody Bellinger grounded out to end the inning. Roberts said that "We had a chance to scratch our way back into the game, but we didn't get that big hit." The 4 game series concludes on Thursday, with first pitch at 2:20.
