Marcell Ozuna and the St.Louis Cardinals got an early lead against Nationals ace Max Scherzer as the Cardinals increased their winning streak to 5 games with a 5-1 win over the Washington Nationals last night. Ozuna had 3 hits as Miles Mikolas pitched a beauty for the Cardinals, who have the best record in baseball, at 20-10.

The Cardinals got 3 first inning runs off Scherzer as OF Victor Robles misread Ozuna's fly ball that turned into a Cardinal run. Jose Martinez delivered a 2 run single later in the inning, and it was 3-0 early. Scherzer pitched 7 innings, allowing 8 hits, 4 of which came in the first inning. Ozuna said about Scherzer ''He's one of the aces in the National League, if we can get him early, we can beat him.''

Mikolas, who was winless in his first 3 road starts, gave up only 1 run and 7 hits in 6 wonderful innings. Manager Mike Shildt said that ''His fastball command was a little spotty, but he had the curveball he could rely on." Washington has lost the first 3 games of this series, and 6 of the last 7 games, with their only win coming via a walkoff against the San Diego Padres. The Cardinals will send RHP Dakota Hudson to the mound today, hoping for the series sweep, as the Nats send Stephen Strasburg to the hill.
