Devin Smeltzer's story continues to amaze people. Diagnosed with cancer at the age of 9, Smeltzer took the mound last night for his MLB debut and shut down the Milwaukee Brewers offense. Smeltzer threw 6 shutout innings as the Minnesota Twins picked up a 5-3 win over the Brewers. Smeltzer said that ''It's everything I've dreamed of. I've worked for this my whole life, been through a lot and it all came true today."

The 23 year old allowed only 3 hits, didn't walk anyone, and struck out 7 in his debut. After getting the no-decision, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said that Smeltzer will get another chance at his first major league win. In 9 combined starts with Double A Pensacola and Triple A Rochester, Smeltzer had a 3-2 record with a 1.15 ERA. Smeltzer was called up after Michael Pineda was placed on the IL.

Smeltzer got his last 8 batters out, striking out Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain to end his night. He got out of trouble in the second, third, and fourth innings, with the final out in each of those innings being a catch at the warning track. Smeltzer was traded to the Twins last July in the trade that sent 2B Brian Dozier to the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Eddie Rosario had a 2 run homer, Max Kepler hit a 2 run double, and CJ Cron had an RBI as well for the Twins' 5 runs.

The Brewers start a 4 game series in Pittsburgh on Thursday, and they will send Chase Anderson to the mound against Pittsburgh's Joe Musgrove. The Twins head to Tampa Bay on Thursday to start a 10 game road trip, and will send lefty Martin Perez, who has been hot lately, to the mound against the Rays' Charlie Morton.
