David Price picked up right where he left off. Price allowed 2 runs, both unearned, as the Boston Red Sox routed the Toronto Blue Jays 12-2. Price allowed 3 hits and struck out 4 over 5 innings in his first start off the IL. Brandon Workman, Hector Velazquez, Heath Hembree, and Ryan Brasier combined to not allow a single hit in relief of Price.

Rafael Devers got the scoring started in the first inning with an RBI single to score Mitch Moreland. Xander Bogaerts scored on a throwing error by Luke Maile later in the inning to make it 2-0. In the 3rd, Bogaerts singled home Moreland and Mookie Betts to make it 4-2 Boston. Then came Michael Chavis, who hit his 9th homer of the season for 2 more Boston runs. In the 6th, Jackie Bradley Jr homered for two more runs to make it 8-2. Devers had an RBI single, and Steve Pearce hit a sac fly in the 7th to make it 10-2. Bogaerts homered to left in the 9th inning, and Devers homered right after Bogaerts to get the 12-2 final score. Chavis said after that ''You see a bit of a glimpse of what we're capable of, I wouldn't even say we're hot yet, but things are going the right way, for sure, and being part of those innings, it's definitely something fun.''

Edwin Jackson gave up 6 runs and 7 hits in 5 innings of work for Toronto, taking his first loss of the year. Toronto is the 14th team Jackson has played for, a MLB record. Freddy Galvis is the only Toronto batter to reach base after the second inning, with a walk in the 7th inning. Manager Charlie Montoyo said that ''The Red Sox are one of the best teams in baseball, early on in the game, we didn't make a couple of plays, and they took advantage. That's what good teams do.'' Toronto sends ace Marcus Stroman to the mound in the second game of the series, while Boston sends fellow lefty Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound.
