Cole Hamels was sharp all day, even when he was hitting Nolan Arenado. Hamels threw 7 innings of shutout ball as the Chicago Cubs topped the Colorado Rockies 10-1. Hamels also had two hits and drove in two runs. His performance was masked by the rising tensions throughout the game.

Arenado left the game in the 5th inning after Hamels plunked him in the third inning, resulting in an arm contusion for Arenado. Three more batters, Hamels included, were hit later in the game. Arenado wasn't surprised he got hit, because when the two teams played in Chicago last week, Kris Bryant was hit three times in two games. He also missed time last year after getting hit by Rockies starter German Marquez, who hit two Cubs in his start last week. Things calmed down until the 7th inning, when reliever Bryan Shaw hit Hamels, and rookie reliever Phillip Diehl hit Anthony Rizzo in the 8th. Brad Brach then hit Tony Wolters in the 9th. Only warnings came of all this.

Jason Heyward got the scoring started in the second inning with a two run single, and then Kyle Schwarber hit a 3 run homer to make it 5-0. In the 5th, Hamels singled in two runs, and Schwarber hit a sac fly to make it 8-0 Cubs. In the 8th, Javier Baez hit a 2 run homer to make it 10-0. The Rockies lone run came in the 9th, when Chris Iannetta grounded out to score Wolters. The Cubs head to Los Angeles, where Jon Lester gets the start against Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers. The Rockies welcome the San Diego Padres to town, where Jon Grey will start.
