Homer record leads D-Backs over Phils

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies had a mini home run derby last night. The teams combined to hit 13 homers as the D-Backs prevailed by a 13-8 score last night. The homers hit were 8 by the D-Backs and 5 by Philly, and this is an MLB record for most homers hit in a game. Normally, 5 homers would be enough to win a game, but not in this instance.

The homer barrage started in the first inning, when Jarrod Dyson homered to right field off Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff. The next batter, Ketel Marte, also homered to make it 2-0. The next batter, David Peralta, also homered, as the D-Backs went back-to back-to back in the first to make it 3-0. In the bottom half, Jean Segura homered for Philly to make it 3-1. In the 4th, after Philly had tied the game at 3 on an RBI ground out and single, Eduardo Escobar hit a solo homer and Alex Avila added a 2 run shot to make it 6-3. Scott Kingery homered in the bottom half to make it 6-4. In the 5th, Escobar homered again, and Ildemaro Vargas also homered to make it 9-4. In the 8th, with the D-Backs ahead 10-4 after an Escobar RBI double, Kingery hit his second homer of the night, and then Bryce Harper homered for two more. In the 9th, Vargas homered again, and Rhys Hoskins and Jay Bruce homered to make it 13-8, which held.

The Phillies send Jake Arrieta to the mound tonight against Arizona's Jon Duplantier. First pitch is at 7:05 in Philadelphia.
