Patrick Corbin struck out 8 hitters over 7 innings as the Washington Nationals took the first game of a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies by a 6-2 score. This was the series opener, as the games on Monday and last night were rained out. Washington picked up their 15th win in 22 games, and they seem to be heating up. Corbin allowed 4 hits and 3 walks, and ended just one strikeout away from 1000.

The Phillies jumped ahead in the first thanks to a Scott Kingery solo homer. In the bottom of the first, Juan Soto tied it up with an RBI single. In the 4th, Gerardo Parra doubled in a run, and Brian Dozier did the same in the 6th to make it 3-1 Washington. In the 8th, Dozier hit a 2 run homer, and Parra added a solo shot. The other Phillies run came in the 9th off a Brad Miller triple.

The Phillies lost their 6th game out of 8, and 11 of 17. Manager Gabe Kapler said that ''We weren't able to muster any sort of consistent threat, we didn't swing the bats the way we're capable of swinging the bats and weren't able to put runs on the board.''

Max Scherzer continues to amaze. A day after he broke his nose while bunting during batting practice, he came back with a black eye and struck out 10 batters over 7 innings. He allowed only 4 hits and two walks without a run as the Nats blanked the Phillies 2-0 in the second game of the doubleheader to sweep it. Jake Arrieta was a tough luck loser for the Phillies, going 6 innings and allowing just two hits and one run. Both teams had just 4 hits all night.

Brian Dozier got the first run with a solo shot to left, and Victor Robles also homered to make it 2-0, which held. Stephen Strasburg starts the series finale for Washington, while Aaron Nola starts for the Phillies.
