Mookie Betts homered three times, Andrew Cashner got his first win in a Red Sox uniform, and the Boston Red Sox topped the New York Yankees by a 10-5 score. The Red Sox have now won the first two games of the series and sit 9 games behind the Yankees in the AL East. If all goes as planned in Boston, they'll be 7 back on Monday morning.

Betts jumped on Yankee starter James Paxton early, crushing a leadoff homer to the monster seats for the early 1-0 lead. Three batters later, JD Martinez launched a ball onto Lansdowne Street for a 2 run shot to make it 3-0. In the 3rd, Betts stepped up and launched another bomb to the monster to make it 4-0 and two homers in two at bats. Martinez came up to the plate a little bit later and tripled to right field to score Xander Bogaerts and make it 5-0. In the 4th, Betts blasted his third homer of the game for another 2 runs and a 7-0 lead. In the 6th, after the Yankees got a run, Betts doubled in Michael Chavis and Rafael Devers doubled in Betts to make it 9-1. In the 7th, Austin Romine hit an RBI infield single, and DJ Lemahieu grounded into an RBI double play to make it 9-3. Sam Travis ripped a double in the bottom of the 7th to make it 10-3. The Yankees got two runs in the 9th to make it 10-5.

Cashner got his first Red Sox win, going 6 2/3 innings, striking out 6 and allowing 3 runs on 10 hits and one walk. Marcus Walden finished the 7th, Josh Taylor worked out of the 8th, Heath Hembree didn't record an out in the 9th, and Brandon Workman finished it for the Red Sox. Paxton lasted just 4 innings for New York, giving up 7 runs on 9 hits. David Hale, Adam Ottavino, and Zack Britton pitched out of the Yankees bullpen. With the win, Boston sits 0.5 games behind the second wild card spot, and could move into a 3 way tie with the Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays if Oakland loses to the Texas Rangers tonight.

The Yankees, in order to secure at least a series split, will need a win Saturday, and they are sending lefty CC Sabathia to the mound to try and get it. The Red Sox are sending lefty Eduardo Rodriguez to the hill, who is looking to improve his record to 13-4 on the season. First pitch tomorrow will be at 4:05 EST on FOX.
