Nats roll past Orioles

Although the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles play in stadiums just 40 miles apart, these teams are on completely different trends. This was evident in the opening of a two game series on Tuesday, with the Nationals continuing their rise in the playoff hunt and the Orioles continuing the downward spiral that has enveloped them this season. Matt Adams and Juan Soto homered, Austin Voth pitched a solid game, and the Nats took the first game of the short series by a 8-1 score. Voth allowed one run and 4 hits over 6 solid innings for the Nats.

Adams got the scoring started for Washington by belting a homer to right field to give Washington the lead. In the bottom of the second, Hanser Alberto tied the game at 1 on a homer to left field off Voth. The Nats took the lead in the 3rd on an Anthony Rendon double to right field that scored Trea Turner. In the 6th, Soto homered to center field, and Victor Robles scored on a balk. In the 7th, Rendon doubled home Adam Eaton to make it 5-1. In the 8th, Robles singled in a run, and Soto and Adams added RBI singles in the 9th to make it 8-1.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez commented on Voth's performance after the game, saying that ''He's been up here and he's pitched well, and I like what I'm seeing, he seems like if he struggles for an inning or a few pitches, he has that poise and he gets back into that rhythm again, and I kind of like that.'' Nationals starters haven't lost a game since June 15, have allowed one run or fewer in 11 of their last 16 starts, and have a 1.78 ERA over the last 11 games. The Orioles continue to spiral, with this loss giving them a league worst 12-35 record at home this year, and the league worst 28-66 overall record. Asher Wojciechowski took the loss for the Orioles, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits over 5 1/3 innings.

The Nationals will call up Erick Fedde to start the final game of the short two game series on Wednesday. Fedde hasn't pitched at any level since July 2, when he started for Triple A Fresno. Aaron Brooks will make his second start for the Orioles.
