Chris Sale allowed 2 hits, Rafael Devers homered, and the Boston Red Sox shut out the Toronto Blue Jays 5-0 in the afternoon series finale. This was Sale's first win anywhere in a month and first win at Fenway since July of 2018. Sale struck out 12 hitters, making it the 11th time this season he has had 10 or more strikeouts.

The Red Sox did the bulk of the damage in the 5th inning, when Sandy Leon started the scoring on an RBI single that scored Sam Travis. After Mookie Betts got on base, Rafael Devers homered again, this time for three runs to make it 4-0 Red Sox. Devers now has 19 this season. In the 7th, Betts stepped up and homered to left-center field for 418 feet and extending the lead to 5.

Thomas Pannone started for Toronto, and he had to take a 6 hour car ride from his game with Triple A Buffalo all the way to Boston after his flight was cancelled. Pannone gave up 4 runs on 5 hits and walked 3. Marcus Walden pitched two scoreless innings for Boston out of the bullpen, and rookie Darwinzon Hernandez struck out two in a perfect 9th inning. Nathan Eovaldi threw a perfect inning for Triple A Pawtucket today, striking out the side. Eovaldi then went straight to Fenway Park and will join the Red Sox on their trip to Baltimore. There have been numerous reports that Eovaldi will be activated this weekend and will pitch. He is going to be Boston's closer once he is activated.

The Blue Jays head to Detroit for the weekend, where Marcus Stroman will face Detroit's Jordan Zimmerman. The Red Sox are headed to Baltimore, where David Price will start against John Means.
