Two days after the birth of his daughter, Max Scherzer threw 7 dominant innings, Kurt Suzuki homered, and the Washington Nationals blanked the Kansas City Royals 6-0. Scherzer struck out 11 batters, walked one, and allowed only 4 hits. Scherzer has a 0.84 ERA over his last 9 appearances and has won 7 straight starts. Both teams wore throwback uniforms to mark their 50th season in MLB, with the Nationals wearing the Montreal Expos jerseys, as they originated in Montreal before moving to Washington.

Juan Soto started the scoring in the first inning by scoring Trea Turner on a single to center field. In the second, Suzuki belted a 2 run homer to left field to make the lead 3-0. Later in the inning, Turner was caught stealing second base, but that allowed Victor Robles to score from third and make it 4-0. In the 7th, after Anthony Rendon hit a sac fly, Soto singled home Adam Eaton to make it 6-0.

Royals starter Glenn Sparkman gave up 9 hits and 4 runs over 6 innings of work. Manager Ned Yost said that ''The way it looked early, they were going to bash his brains in, and he did a nice job of settling down and making pitches, I was pleased that he was able to give us six strong." The Royals have lost 8 of the last 10 games.

A highlight of this game was Scherzer stealing second base in the 4th inning after a single. It was his first of the season and second of his career. Patrick Corbin will start the series finale for Washington on Sunday, while Jakob Junis gets the ball for Kansas City.
