Cubs breeze by Reds to pad division lead

   Anthony Rizzo had two hits on his  30th birthday, Nicholas Castellanos continued his Chicago surge, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 12-5 last night. The Cubs increased their NL central lead to 3 1/2 games, the biggest of the season. Manager Joe Maddon said that ''That's the way we're supposed to look - the energy before the game, the dugout was alive." 

   The Cubs quickly jumped ahead on a Rizzo RBI double in the first. The Reds tied it in the bottom half on a double. In the 3rd, Castellanos homered to left field, Javier Baez hit an RBI double, and Ian Happ shot a two run single into left field to make it 5-1. The Reds tied it up again on a two run homer, a Kyle Farmer single, and catcher interference. That would be all the Reds could muster. In the 4th, Castellanos homered to right, and new acquisition Jonathan Lucroy doubled in a run in the 5th to make it 7-5. In the 7th, Happ hit a two run bomb to right field, and Kris Bryant shot a two run single into center field, making it 11-5. In the 8th, Lucroy singled in a run to make it 12-5. 

   Tyler Chatwood got the win for the Cubs, coming in relief of Cole Hamels, who lasted just 3 innings. Chatwood went 3 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk and striking out 6. Hamels said of the offense that ''With the guys we have off the bench now, it's a deep lineup and that's what it takes to go far." New acquisition Kevin Gausman took the loss for Cincinnati, lasting 2 innings in relief of Alex Wood, who went 3. Gausman allowed two runs on 4 hits and two strikeouts. The Reds sent 3B Kyle Farmer to the mound in the 9th to finish the game. He allowed just one hit.

   Yu Darvish will take the mound for the Cubs in the second game of the series Friday night. He is 3-0 in 6 starts against the Reds in his career with a 2.92 ERA. He is 4-5 on the season. Trevor Bauer will make his Great American Ballpark debut for the Reds. He lasted just 4 2/3 innings in his first start, a 5-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves.
