Harper launches grand slam to lead Phillies over Cubs

Once the ball left Bryce Harper's bat, there was no doubt. The Phillies had come back. Harper demolished a grand slam to the second deck, and the Philadelphia Phillies walked off the Chicago Cubs by a 7-5 score to secure a series sweep. Harper, who has mostly been disappointing this season, knew everyone expected him to get hits in clutch situations like this, and he delivered. This is probably his biggest hit as a member of the Phillies so far.

However, it was all Cubs to start. Anthony Rizzo got them on the board in the 3rd with a solo homer to right field. In the 4th, David Bote doubled in a run, Albert Almora Jr singled Bote in, and Rizzo singled Almora in to make it 4-0 Cubs. In the 5th, Klye Schwarber homered to center to make it 5-0 Cubs. Entering the bottom of the 8th, the Phillies woke up. Corey Dickerson got the Phils on the board with an RBI single. Then came the 9th. Brad Miller trimmed the lead to 3 with an RBI single to center. Roman Quinn made the lead two with another RBI single to load the bases. Harper then stepped up and delivered. If you would like to watch the video of the epic slam, click here

Ranger Suarez got the win for the Phillies, working two innings and giving up no runs on just one hit and two walks. Pedro Strop got the loss for the Cubs, giving up the first two runs that scored on Harper's slam. Prior to that, Cubs starter Yu Darvish struck out 10 batters. The Phillies proceeded to rally against Chicago's bullpen when Darvish left the game. Harper's slam came off new signee Derek Holland.

The Cubs head to Pittsburgh, where Kyle Hendricks will start the first game of 3 that will finish a 10 game road trip for the Cubs. The Phillies welcome the San Diego Padres to town, where righty Vince Velasquez will start the first of 3 games.
